Communicating with employees who do not have English as their first language presents unique communication challenges for managers, team leaders and co-workers. This short programme supports managers on their journey to building communication bridges with those from a non-English speaking background (NESB).


  • The challenges of dealing with NESB team members
    • What emotions do the challenges bring and how to overcome them
  • Emotional Intelligence/empathy and how to use it
  • Understand the mental process of how a non-native English speaker:
    • receives, translates and processes information
    • formulates a response, translates it and then communicates it
  • Simplifying language to ensure better understanding, without reducing the impact of the message
  • Use of language and jargon
  • Using non-verbal communication styles effectively
  • Barriers to communication and how to overcome them
  • Practical methods to reinforce messages
